It All Started with Bread: A Free Loaf to Say Thank You

Infographic: Spend $25, Get a Free Loaf! Find a Café.

In the summer of 1993, Leslie Mackie opened a small bakery in Belltown to bake bread the way she had learned on her travels in Italy and France. Six people worked there. An antique baker’s rack held a dozen kinds of bread.

Leslie’s first two loaves were the Casera and the Sour White. The Casera took her nearly a year. She modeled it on a loaf from Poilâne, the Paris bakery, and raised it with a starter she grew from champagne grapes.

Bread came first, then pastries, and soon the Macrina Café followed, with savory dishes for brunch and lunch. There are seven cafés now. Every morning the cases fill with pastries, tarts, and sandwiches.

We’re proud of all of it. But more than anything, bread is who we are.

The Casera and the Sour White are on our shelves today, and the Sour White still rises from the wild starter Leslie began in 1993. Several of our loaves are made with whole grain flours freshly milled at Cairnspring Mills, in the Skagit Valley.

Bread is the foundation of every meal we serve. Sitting down to share meals with family and friends is the richest part of life.

For more than thirty years, you’ve let our loaves be part of your meals, too. They’ve sat on your weeknight tables and your holiday tables. They’ve gone home under your arm and out to friends’ front doors.

We’d like to thank you for that. From Monday, October 19, through Sunday, October 25, when you spend $25 or more, choose a loaf of Macrina bread to take home. It’s on us.

The offer is good in our cafés, not on pre-orders or DoorDash. It covers bread loaves only.

Pick up pastries for the office or bring home a pot pie for dinner. However you get to $25, take a loaf home on us.

Thank you for making room for our bread at your table.

Valid October 19–25, 2026, in Macrina cafés only. Not valid on pre-orders or DoorDash. Spend $25 (pre-tax) or more and receive one free qualifying loaf of Macrina bread. Bread loaves only, while supplies last. Excludes buns, rolls, English muffins, bagels, coffee cakes, babka, and other non-loaf products.
